Fedora 20: install XFCE/Mate and Compton

How to improve an XFCE session installed alongside the Fedora 20 Gnome session and get rid of tearing issues?

[Update] How to install Mate Desktop environment on Fedora 20: add the following repo for Fedora 20, which includes community packages and packages which aren’t available in fedora repos then use Yum to install.

sudo yum install https://dl.dropbox.com/u/105479527/Mate-Desktop/fedora-release-extra-20/mate-desktop-fedora/noarch/mate-desktop-extra-release-20-1.fc20.noarch.rpm
sudo yum groupinstall mate-desktop-extra
Fedora Mate Desktop, Litestyle-Brave-Dark, Minimalist-Dark borders, modified Faience Claire iconset.

Now, let’s improve XFCE session.

Fedora XFCE, Numix & Yo Semite themes.

Login Manager

First minor improvement, switch the login manager from Gdm to Lightdm, then log out:

sudo yum install lightdm
systemctl disable gdm.service
systemctl enable lightdm.service

Now install a better compositor manager. Xfw4 has some tearing issues, quite visible while browsing or worse while watching videos. One solution: get rid of Xfw4 and use Compton instead.

Download the compton-debuginfo-0.1.0-1.1.x86_64.rpm file at this address and:

sudo yum install compton-debuginfo-0.1.0-1.1.x86_64.rpm
sudo yum install compton

Deactivate Xfw4 on the XFCE session:

xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s false

Modify the compton.conf to your liking and add a startup item (Settings > Session):

compton -b --config /path/to/conf
