Ubuntu 15.10: Unity desktop customization

The next LTS (long term support) version of Ubuntu – 16.04 – is about to be released in a few days. It will bring a new feature (among others), totally unnecessary and long awaited: the possibility to move the Unity launcher from the left of the screen to the bottom. Be sure I will jump on this new release on day one. In the meantime, let see how we configured our current Ubuntu 15.10 desktop.

Ubuntu may be the desktop environment that requires the smallest amont of customization. Not because it’s perfect, Unity still lacks the well-polished touch of a Mint Cinnamon for instance, but because it gets to a point where every action is simple and obvious. In that regard, all you have to do after a fresh install is to grab the Unity Tweak Tool, deactivate a few annoying options (Amazon suggestions, seriously?) and maybe (just maybe, because Radiance is a beautiful default theme) change the GTK and icons themes.

Unity Tweak Tool (UTT)

sudo apt-get install unity-tweak-tool

Faenza and Faience icon themes in .deb packages: http://ppa.launchpad.net/tiheum/equinox/ubuntu/pool/main/f/

Moka and Faba icon themes through PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:moka/daily
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install moka-icon-theme faba-icon-theme

Faba-Colors can be found as a .deb package for old Ubuntu versions: https://launchpad.net/~moka/+archive/ubuntu/stable/+packages

Arc GTK and Vertex GTK themes: prebuild package links can be found on the author’s github page for Ubuntu 15.04 and 15.10:

And to conclude, for a clean LibreOffice suite, the Sifr icon theme:

sudo apt-get install libreoffice-style-sifr

Once your packages are installed, launch UTT to:

  • Deactivate the suggestions in your Unity launcher and the search preferences
  • Make it fade when inactive
  • Modify the GTK and icon themes

First example, a ‘keep it simple’ Radiance GTK and Faience icons combination.

Then, the ‘have a look at the stunning Horst3180’s creations’ with Vertex as option #1 :

And Horst3180’s Arc GTK theme and Faba-Colors Lutu icons, as option #2 :
